Head’s up, V8 Land Cruiser owners… It’s time to delve into the wonder that is the intercooler fan kit.
Whatever model cruiser you own, one of the key aspects of great performance in all conditions is engine efficiency. Intercooler fans play a massive role, optimising and cooling the charge air temperature to reduce the heat within the coolant and exhaust gas temperature (EGT). These are two critical aspects that can cause sluggish engine performance.
Intercooler fans work by using a sensor that sits at the rear of the factory intercooler. We’ve designed our kits to be easy to fit – if you’re handy with a couple of tools then you’re more than capable of an installation – just follow the colour-coded picture instructions (and there’s great techie support backup if you need it).
The end result of optimising the charge air temperature is a more responsive and enjoyable drive. This is especially crucial when the mercury is going off the scale – something that happens regularly here in Oz.
Both the 70 and 200 series in particular have some genetic airflow path flaws. The 70, while having a bonnet scoop that provides direct airflow to aid cooling, tends not to have a proper seal and this affects performance. The 200, on the other hand, can have issues with the factory ducting, especially if spotlights or bull bars are fitted. The model-specific fan kit addresses this by actively pulling the air through the intercooler, dramatically lowering the charge air temperature and improving performance.
In the video, Trav runs through the highlights of the PDP intercooler kits, which include:
· A wiring harness designed for simplicity and featuring Dodge plugs, power connector, earth connector and ignition pickup.
· 10-inch Spal fans chosen for low noise and high airflow. These are mounted on a CNC bracket that bolts directly to the intercooler.
· The dress cover (a critical component) mounts on top of the fan assembly and ensures a super-tight seal for maximum airflow.
· Shim kits to accommodate variations in intercoolers and achieve that all-important seal.
The kit is compatible with both factory and PWR intercoolers, giving you full flexibility for different setups. While Trav doesn’t run through the full installation, this video gives a heap of info about the whys and wherefores of the reasons to fit one to your rig. Stay tuned though, as a sister video will soon be up (or might already be up, depending on when you’re watching this) that runs through a complete install.
PDP intercooler fan kits are just one example of the high-quality range of 70 series, 200 series, 300 series and other Toyota model upgrades we offer. Check them out on our website and remember that we’re always available to contact should you need any 4x4 advice.
