Sometimes, even the best vehicle designers get it wrong. Trav runs through what is a serious flaw in the 300 Series – placing a fuel filter in the valley of the engine. The accessibility is a nightmare and, brace yourself, if it needs fixing it’s going to cost you a cool $3,500 to do…
So… If you’ve got a similar model 300, then you’re going to want to install a pre-fuel filter to prevent the possibility of this happening.
In this video, we run through exactly how to do this. From the tools and kit you need for the job to a detailed step-by-step guide, if you’re planning on any level of off-roading and want to protect your investment, this relatively simple addition is likely to save you a whole lot of potential heartache (and money!).
The process isn’t too complicated and is achievable by anyone with a bit of practical ability. Watch as Trav:
- Preps the vehicle: Jack it up, remove the spare tyre and the plastic trim panels around the fuel filter area.
- Disconnects the fuel filter: So you can access the factory fuel filter.
- Installs the pre-filter kit: Mount the bracket, connect the fuel lines and slot in the pre-filter cartridge.
- Bleeds the system: To remove any air bubbles.
- Connects everything back together: Check everything is running correctly and you’re good to go.
Once the kit is in place, add checking the pre-filter and manufacturer-recommended replacement to your regular vehicle maintenance tasks.
This shouldn’t be a necessary upgrade – Landcruiser has messed up with this design. Thankfully, it’s a pretty easy fix and one that we heartily recommend.
