Wondering about what checks you need to carry out on your 70s series prior to hitting the road? Travis runs through the essentials in this comprehensive video.
Discover quite how meticulously this should be carried out – especially for longer trips – if you want to reduce the risk of problems occurring down route.
This includes:
· Ensuring registration and insurance are in place and valid.
· Check service records are adhered to and, if appropriate, performed well before the day you’re due to hit the road.
· Route planning tools, such as GPS, are functioning and you have old-school maps in the vehicle as a backup.
· Buy any necessary permits and make bookings in good time.
· Checking the battery is in good health and that all charging systems are working correctly.
· Check, clean or replace the air filters and pre-filters. Don’t forget to do the airflow meter as well. Ditto, for the fuel filtration system.
· Check all aspects of the vehicle cooling system.
· Replace or clean the catch can filter.
· How healthy is the clutch? Does it just need to be flushed and bled, or is it due a replacement?
· Change the drivetrain fluids.
· Check the wheels and carry out any necessary maintenance (wheel bearings, wheel nuts, freewheeling hubs, etc). Also ensure all the tyres (don’t forget the spare) are in good order.
· If you’ve got towing gear, inspect and test everything, including the trailer itself, plug and compressor.
· Carry out a thorough brake service.
· Last, but not least, sanitise the water tank and check items on the roof rack.
This, and more, is discussed in detail, and we’ll touch on performance upgrades and other bespoke considerations. Pre-planning is all part of the fun, and the addition of certain electricals, as well as awnings and roof racks – amongst other things – can add to the trip enjoyment.
